Dicky Betts (born Forrest Richard Betts, December 12, 1943 – April 18, 2024) was a guitarist, singer, songwriter, and composer best known as a founding member of The Allman Brothers Band. His guitar duets with Duane Allman were pivotal in introducing the use of melody and counterpoint in contrast to the dominant rhythm/lead roles prescribed for dual-guitars until that time. When Duane passed in 1971, Betts became the lead guitarist of the Allman Brothers. During this time, he released his first solo album as Richard Betts "Highway Call" (1974). Throughout his career he's perform with various other bands using his namesake including Dicky Betts & Great Southern; Dickey Betts Band; Betts, Hall, Leavell and Trucks; and Dicky Betts. He permanently left The Allman Brothers Band in 2000 and passed away on April 18, 2024 at the age of 80 from cancer and COPD.
