Slade and band member Joe King attended Faith Christian Academy together and formed The Fray in 2002] after bumping into each other at a local Guitar Center. Slade started singing when he was 8 years old, and started playing piano when he was 11 years old after temporarily losing his voice. Slade co-wrote all of the songs on The Fray's debut album How to Save a Life.
