 Walter Winsor Jeff Beck Denver Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, I know. It's 1:54 am and I'm just climbing out of my car from another all time rock-n-roll evening. The Friday night started out with a great nap. Woke up from a deep afternoon couch to time to rally & head to the show. The warm up band (one man guitar player) was set for 8pm. Figured I could arrive at 8:30 and be golden. Left the house with the idea of parking and getting a drink or two before heading into the Paramount. By the time I got there it was 8pm, so I headed for the door & got 2 glasses of wine and decided to watch all the gray hairs come out of the woodwork. Passing by the merch booth, I got an ominous glimpse. They had T-shirts, CD's, tour books and even albums for sale. The kicker was a tour poster for $20, and a Jeff Beck autographed one for $100. I would have bought one because I know Jeff NEVER signs anything and his autograph is worth much more than $100USD. My framed litho of the "Guitar Shop" cover hanging in my front room cost $500, and that was 20 years ago. Anyway, right as I walked by the guy was X-ing out the autographed sign because they had sold out of the few they had. After all, this was the second show of the tour. Saw lots of great old timers and even a few t-shirts from old I'd not seen before. It is hard to put one past a guy who used to work in an ultra hip record store, but sure enough, there were 2 I'd never seen. I has even pulled out my "Jeff Beck" button (graphics from the "There & Back" LP) to display on my carefully chosen shirt and it was from 1980. So standing there drinking my wine I run into John Dawson, a long- time friend whom I bought my second 5th row center seat for. He had once mentioned how he loved Jeff & had never seen him, so I thought I'd treat him to an up close experience as a little pick-me-up from the doldrums of unemployment. We chatted until the warm up act was over and then headed for the seats. Not knowing how close we were to the stage, it was a pleasure to see his face as we got closer & closer. He was blown away with the location and immediately thanked me before the first note. The lights went out and Jeff came on to an enthusiastic response. His set was a new throw back to his previous tours where he blended the familiar tunes with the ones he rarely plays. Just finishing his "Tribute to Les Paul" tour, this time he was with his "old" band consisting of the great Jason Robello (keys) and Narda-Michael Walden (drums). Never a big fan of NMW, I was impressed at his playing this night. The new female bass player was great, but I'm still a Tal Winkenfield man. She managed to convince me by the time her solo came, but still... The first two songs were terribly muddy, as you come to expect from the Paramount. Big disappointment as I thought being so close meant all stage amps with a bit of front of house side wash. They managed to get it together by the 3rd song, or at least my ears became attuned by then. Jeff proceeded to annihilate the set list with many flourishes of passion. The songs were all over the place. Tommy Bolin's "Stratus", Hendrix, Beatles and even Sly & the Family Stone's "I Want To Take You Higher". Boom chacka lacka Bomm chacka lacka... I managed to take tons of photos and a few videos with no bother from security. By the time it was over we had our faces melted and headed for the door. Outside I ran into my friends Mike & Marty and his brother Jeff & son. We decided to get a drink at the Appaloosa before heading home and discuss the show. Turns out Jeff's son knows a bit about music production, so it turned into quite an interesting conversation. We expounded upon the benefits and limitations of compression in modern music production, the differences between hard knee and soft knee limiting and various capture devices, Soundforge, Pro Tools and current trends. Finally it became time to wrap it up and they paid the tab and we all promised to get together Sunday to get audio copies of the show and watch the Chinese Grand Prix- Mike cooking a special meal and all the trimmings of a proper race party. As I left, I rounded the corner and headed up the street to my parking garage and noticed the tour busses running. I meandered by there because there were 5 or 7 people standing around and it just so happened that Jeff was inside signing a few tour books for the fans. I chatted with them and the bus driver for a minute with the bus door opened and Jeff had just signed a few items. This was such a rare occurrence and I told them how Jeff NEVER signs anything, but sure enough, he is really fresh on this night and was in a great mood after a great show. The door closed and the bus took off, I headed for my car and was just buzzing from all the fantastic good times I had just experienced. Good friends, Good music, good wine and not wanting it to end, I headed to the Hornet on the way home and caught the qualifying for the F1 race in Shanghai. I drank a pain killer, grabbed a pizza from the walnut room and ate it on the way home. So, I just pulled in, wrote this and now I'll download all the photos I took before passing out.
