 Showdeer One of the craziest and best shows I've ever seen. I remember going backstage and I was kinda touching one of the masks and someone quietly said no don't do that lol And then Grux appeared and was super nice with big smile and got to meet him and shake his hand it was amazing.  Fraser Allen A double-header of a week began with an excellent Christmas meal. I had to tear myself away from the post-dinner drinks, where I was deep in conversation with a newer, younger senior colleague about life, work and everything in between. Across the table I had even promised to show her a two-pint cup, although that particular mission would have to wait until the following night. After checking into a hotel near Shepherd's Bush, I hurried back across London to the Roundhouse, arriving just in time as the lights dimmed and the familiar strains of the opening song rang out. The venue was packed with a mixture of veteran fans and younger faces, all ready for an evening in the company of one of Britain's most enduring bands. What followed was a remarkable two hours and fifteen minutes that felt less like a greatest-hits package and more like a celebration of the band's entire history. Tim Burgess and company dug deep into their catalogue, mixing beloved singles with album tracks and B-sides that rewarded the faithful. It was the sort of setlist that could easily have fallen flat in lesser hands, yet the audience seemed to savour every surprise. The sound was immense, with shimmering guitars washing around the famous circular venue while Burgess' distinctive vocals remained as clear and commanding as ever. Wave after wave of melodies crashed over the crowd, and there was barely a moment when people were not singing along, dancing or exchanging knowing smiles at the appearance of a long-forgotten favourite. The decision to perform without a support act was undoubtedly a gamble, but it paid off spectacularly. Rather than feeling overlong, the evening flew by, fuelled by the band's energy and the crowd's enthusiasm. Every time it seemed they might be reaching the finish line, another classic would appear to lift the atmosphere even higher. Next year will mark 30 years since I first saw them supporting Oasis at Knebworth, and that thought crossed my mind more than once during the evening. Three decades later, The Charlatans remain a band with genuine vitality and purpose. Most impressive of all is Tim Burgess himself. Now approaching 60, he still prowls, dances and bounces around the stage with the enthusiasm of someone half his age, refusing to stand still and carrying the audience with him every step of the way. By the final encore, the Roundhouse felt less like a concert venue and more like a gathering of old friends. It was a performance full of confidence, nostalgia, surprises and sheer joy, proving once again that The Charlatans have lost none of their ability to captivate an audience.  Fraser Allen My second visit to Chilfest featured a slightly less impressive lineup than last year. Nevertheless, the excellent setup, good selection of beers (including plenty of 0% options in my case), and strong attendance once again proved that Chilfest is a festival well worth supporting. After Friday's tribute acts, it was time for the original artists to take centre stage on Saturday. Tony Hadley got the crowd going with a set packed with Spandau Ballet classics, while also taking time to thank his former bandmates. Next up were Toploader, who mixed their own hits with excellent covers of Mr Blue Sky and The Whole of the Moon. As always, Dancing in the Moonlight remained a crowd favourite. The Christians delivered a solid performance, as did Fun Lovin' Criminals, despite the absence of Huey Morgan. Kid Creole, accompanied by his new Coconuts, somehow managed to stretch four songs across 45 minutes, but remained highly entertaining for a performer just shy of his 76th birthday. Headliners Level 42 then took to the stage and delivered a very strong set, focusing mainly on their greatest hits. Mike Lindup's vocals were spot on, particularly during Lessons in Love, while Mark King demonstrated that he has lost none of his remarkable bass-playing ability. And with that, another Chilfest came to an end. Overall, it was a slightly above-average affair compared with last year, but considering the ticket price and the importance of supporting a local Hertfordshire festival, it remains an event that is well worth attending.
