 Fraser Allen Watching Oasis's excellent documentary Don't Look Back in Anger, and seeing the frenzy surrounding their return to Knebworth next year, prompted me to look back at what remains one of the most memorable days of my youth. It was only my fifth ever gig and, more importantly, my first experience of a true festival atmosphere. My friend Simon and I arrived early, determined to make the most of the day. The sun was already shining and, as we settled into what would become a very long but unforgettable day, there was a real sense that we were part of something special. The opening act, Kula Shaker, gave us a glimpse of what was to come with songs from their forthcoming album K. They were followed by Dreadzone, who put on a decent enough performance, although much of the crowd seemed content to stand around and wait for the bigger names. The notable exception was when they launched into Little Britain, their one major hit, which finally brought some life to the audience. Then came the bands that would become a major part of my musical life for the next three decades. Cast took to the stage fresh from the success of their debut album and immediately won over the crowd. Their set was lively, confident and full of energy, and they had thousands of people singing along. They were exactly the sort of band made for an occasion like this. Next came the Manic Street Preachers. Less than a year after the disappearance of Richey Edwards, they arrived carrying both the weight of that tragedy and the momentum of a remarkable comeback. Having recently released two of their biggest hits, they delivered a blistering set. The highlight was undoubtedly A Design for Life. By the end, the crowd was singing so loudly that it seemed the band could simply step back and let the audience finish the song for them. There had been real uncertainty about whether The Charlatans would perform at all following the tragic death of keyboardist Rob Collins earlier that summer. Thankfully they did, and they were magnificent. Their set mixed established favourites with songs from the forthcoming Tellin' Stories album, creating one of the day's most memorable performances. Looking back, it felt like a band determined to carry on despite adversity, and the crowd responded warmly. Then it was time for the main event. Oasis walked onto the stage before a crowd that was not only enormous but was also being joined by listeners across the country through BBC Radio 1's live broadcast. The atmosphere was incredible. Here was the biggest band in Britain performing at the peak of their powers. Yet, if I'm being completely honest, there was something slightly unexpected about their set. The songs were magnificent and the occasion itself was historic, but it somehow lacked the connection I'd felt during some of the earlier performances. Whether it was the sheer scale of the event, less interaction with the crowd, or simply the fact that some of the support acts had exceeded expectations, I couldn't quite decide. Even so, hearing classics from their first two albums, alongside those famous B-sides, was unforgettable. The finale provided one last magical moment when John Squire of The Stone Roses joined the band on stage to play guitar on Champagne Supernova. It was a fitting end to a remarkable day. As often happens at great outdoor events, the weather had one final surprise in store. After basking in glorious sunshine for most of the day, the heavens opened just as everyone was leaving. Simon and I were thoroughly soaked by the time his dad arrived to pick us up. One thing that surprises me when I look back is how little alcohol we drank. That decision paid off the next morning, as I was able to turn up for work in a relatively coherent state. My ex-girlfriend, who worked with me and had attended with a different group of friends, was not quite so fortunate. Her memories of the evening were somewhat patchy, and I found myself helping her fill in the blanks from the previous day's events. Thirty years later, what I remember most isn't just Oasis. It's the entire experience: arriving early with Simon, the sunshine, discovering bands that would soundtrack much of my adult life, singing along with thousands of strangers, getting drenched at the end of the night, and somehow making it into work the next morning. Knebworth may have gone down in history as Oasis's defining moment, but for me it was much more than that. It was my first festival. It was a snapshot of British music at its peak.  [email protected] Only knew sober from the radio. Best friend Kane Powell and a girl we met a couple weeks before Katie talked me into going. I was a dj downtown and I was all about dance music. I just purchased new pair of Docs, xxl polo and Girbeau Brand X jeans. 3 beers purchased and we enter a room the stage is on our left. We are at the edge. Katy is short and in front of us is a guy shorter than her in full catcher protective gear hopping back and forth, I asked why the outfit, come from a game. He looked back with an evil grin as Tool started there set and ran full speed into the crowd. My first pit. Katie followed, so Kane and I couldn’t let the elf and a girl have all the fun. Crowd surfed 8 times. Tried to keep the new docs in the air instead of mud and sweat on the floor. It was amazing. And changed my whole perspective on music I enjoyed. Maynard stage front and center.
