 Bill Mair At the time of this performance, The Association was riding a massive wave of 1960s pop success, fresh off the March 1968 release of their fourth studio album, Birthday. During the late 1960s, the Association had numerous hits at or near the top of the Billboard charts (including "Windy", "Cherish", "Never My Love" and "Along Comes Mary"). In 1967, they made history for being the first band anywhere to open a rock festival - the now historic, Monterey Pop. They were known for intricate vocal harmonies by the band's multiple singers. Their national break came with the song "Along Comes Mary". The song was controversial with some media observers noting that "Mary" was street slang for marijuana, but it went to No. 7 on the Billboard charts and led to the group's first album released in July 1966. Another song from the album, "Cherish", became the Association's first No.1 hit in September 1966 and one of a handful of the Sixties' most popular "slow dance" ballads topping the Billboard Hot 100 on July 1, 1967, staying there for four consecutive weeks. The group's success continued with its next single, "Never My Love". It went to No. 2 in Billboard and No.1 in Cash Box in October 1967. “Never My Love" has since been certified the second-most-frequently-played song in America during the 20th century. Oddly enough, what stands out most for me about this concert was their use of four "SHURE" Vocal Master speaker columns on each side of the stage as their sound system. These were mic’d thru the auditoriums house system and produced an amazingly good vocal sound. The opening act for The Association when they played the Kitchener Memorial Auditorium (K-W Auditorium) on September 19, 1968, was The Paupers.  Cookie First time seeing This insane band we first watched on Letterman, they played Basket case and our world changed!! The Hordern just went nuts when they took to the stage. the crowd was like a mass of flowing water, noone was safe , but in a good way... They cranked out hit after hit, I remember Tre Cools hair being the same colour as his drum kit, GREEN ! they joked around got the audience to sing along to Knowledge and played Chump, She, When I come Around, Basket Case and so many others, Fuckin AWESOME night !!! and For less than $24 !?!?
